Correction of prominent ears is achieved with a procedure called otoplasty. Other ear problems, such as torn earlobes, partial absence because of trauma, birth defects or cancer may also be treated.

The surgical approach to otoplasty is from behind the ear to sculpt the ear cartilage into a more normal configuration. This allows the ear to be positioned closer to the side of the head, which usually corrects the problem. Correction of even a minor problem can significantly improve appearance and self-esteem.

The Procedure

Otoplasty is done in an outpatient setting and takes about one to two hours depending on the extent of the surgery. It can be performed under either general or local anesthesia.
