Breast Reduction is a procedure to reduce the size of breasts that are disproportionately large. These women experience dissatisfaction with body image and may also experience physical pain and discomfort. Often the excessive weight can cause neck, shoulder and back pain, shoulder strap grooving, and chronic or recurrent rashes under the breast. Patients with overly large breasts commonly complain of limited physical activity and exercise, of being self-conscious, and having difficulty with clothing that fits properly. Sagging of the breast can commonly occur as well. Breast reduction surgery provides more youthful, lifted breasts that are more proportionate. This procedure has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any performed in plastic surgery.

Breast Reduction can be performed on one or both sides. It can be considered a reconstructive procedure and may be covered by health insurance when performed to relieve medical symptoms.

There are several methods of performing breast reduction. Although liposuction can be performed to reduce the size of the breast, it is not widely used as the sole method of reduction because it doesn’t address sagging and a low positioned nipple.

Most breast reduction techniques use an “inverted T” or “anchor” incision. This includes an incision around the areola, one extending vertically down toward the crease, and a horizontal incision near the crease. Occasionally, a shorter incision may be recommended. The technique used to reduce the size of the breast is determined by your individual condition and in a consultation with your surgeon.

The Procedure

Surgery times range from three to four hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
