Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures we perform. The goal is to enlarge and improve the overall shape of the breasts. Patients have a choice of saline or silicone implants.
Saline breast implants can be inserted through small access incisions, which usually become inconspicuous after they heal. These incisions may be under the breast (inframammary fold, or IMF), under the areola (periareolar, or PA), or through the armpit (transaxillary, or TA). The recommended approach is influenced by individual physical characteristics and will be determined during your initial consultation.
In 2006, the FDA approved a new, improved generation of silicone gel-filled breast implants. Silicone gel implants were previously only available to patients undergoing reconstructive surgery. Now, all women over the age of 22 considering breast enhancement surgery have the option to choose either silicone or saline-filled breast implants. Silicone gel implants are made of a cohesive, gelatin-like substance that holds together uniformly while still retaining the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants must be placed through larger incisions than saline implants because they are pre-filled.
Several implant shapes are available today. Physical characteristics will often dictate which style and shape is best for you. Size selection varies with each patient’s desires, chest size and the amount of breast tissue present. We guide you in the selection of your implant style and size.
The Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery usually takes about two hours and is done under general anesthesia.
